Swabian towns in Bavaria

Memmingen

  • Memmingen, the Bavarian-Swabian town with its around 42,000 inhabitants is one of the few towns of Swabia which could conserve a closed, medieval town center. Everywhere we encounter the credentials of a 800-year changeful history of an imperial town. The well completed reconstruction of the historic town center made many old buildings shine anew. But even the modern side of Memmingen does not get a raw deal. An inviting pedestrian area, a lot of specialized shops, supermarkets and department stores show up in this dynamic shopping town with five multi-story car parks, easily to be found through a modern guidance system. Rich and varied gastronomy round up the picture of a town where you simply feel well.

    Sights and museums

The historic city center with the old city walls, five towers and gates are totally protected monuments. Guild houses give evidence of the life in the former imperial town.
The Siebendächerhaus, which served to dry the furs in those days, is unique. The market place together with the town hall, the tax house and the great guild, forms the singular town-architectural entity in the very heart of the town.
The Frauenkirche, mentioned for the first time in 1258, got its precious painting in gothic times from Strigel the Elder und Hans the Younger
In the church St. Martin you can admire the remarkable wall paintings of, among others, Hans and Bernhard Strigel and one of the greatest gothic choir stalls in Germany.
The church Kreuzherrnkirche, originally gothic, owns one of the most precious ceilings in Southern Germany with Wessobrunn stucco.
The Antonierhaus, a building of four wings from the 15th century, has become a museum today: the Antoniter- und Strigelmuseum. The building is one of the oldest still conserved structures of the Antonites and was the dwelling of the monks as well as hospital for the people who had fallen ill of the „Mutterkornbrand“ (a disease).
In the Hermansbau, a building in late baroque palazzo stile, the museum of local his tory has found its place, and contemporary art is shown in the Mewo Art Hall Alte Post.

    Sports and leisure activities

Indoor and outdoor pool, Stadium, ice-sport center, tennis center, squash center, golf facilities and much more.
Biking brochure, hiking and riding trails in the beautiful surroundings. Two theaters, cabaret, modern city hall, cultural center, local celebrations and the cultural event „Memminger Meile“ offer entertainment for everybody.
