Mindelheim

  • The town of Mindelheim with its around 14,200 inhabitants invites you to a rendezvous of the senses. Embedded in the charming valley of the river Mindel you will be welcomed even from far away by town gates and towers. Stroll through the snug, the historic town center of Mindelheim and feel the enchantment of historic credentials and the up-to-date function as county seat of Lower Allgaeu. The alleys between the old remains of the town walls and towers seduce to explore, reward with romantic corners, artistic details and surprise with unexpected insights and outlooks.

    Sights and museums

    The medieval town walls frames the historic city center with its homey lanes and top gabled middle-class houses. In its center, we find the town hall with the fantastic façade dating back to the year 1896. The visitor will encounter precious pieces of art in all those numerous churches and chapels. In the parish church St. Stephan, you may find the double grave of duke Ulrich von Teck and Ursula von Baden from the 15th century.
    The late baroque Jesuitenkirche shines in colorful decoration with precious stuccos, superb altars and the incorporated, elegant rococo chapel Franz Xaver. At Christmas time unique baroque nativity set adorns the entire altar space.
    A walk (about 25 minutes) to the Mindelburg with donjon and fountain will give you a wonderful view of the valley. Museum of local history, exhibits of the civil culture and that of the peasant surroundings. Thursday and the 2nd Sunday of the month 14-17 o’clock. Schwäbisches Krippenmuseum (Swabian nativity sets), religious art of the 15th – 20th century Every day except Monday 10-12 and 14-17 o’clock.
    Textilmuseum – Sandtner-Stiftung, fashion from the 18th century on and valuable religious textiles. Every day except Monday 10-12 und 14-17 o’clock.
    Südschwäbisches Archäologiemuseum, history of civilization and culture of the Allgaeu from the last ice-age till the early Middle Ages.
    Every day except Monday 10-12 und 14-17 o’clock.
    Schwäbisches Turmuhrenmuseum, time travel into the 400 year old history of the church clocks. Guided visit: Wednesday and last Sunday of the month 14-17 o’clock.

    Sports and leisure activities

    Indoor pool, heated outdoor pool, Kneipp-facilities, tennis courts, skating and basketball, riding, mini golf, bowling, bike renting, MiniMax children’s park (in the hall); well organized biking and hiking trail net.

    Guided tours

    Guided city tours from May till October every second and last Saturday of the month, meeting point 14.30 o’clock at the theater place. Evening tours, individual thematic and object tours on appointment. Museums visits will be possible even beyond regular opening hours.
